A Long Game...
I caught the news that the Labour government is trying to negotiate a deal with the EU for more freedom of movement for young students to study across borders as before Brexit, alongside other putative trading and climate agreements. All I can say is well done in advance and carry on; we need to rebuild the foreign student base that effectively supports university funding, and if this policy is close-coupled with a drive to create and fill more engineering apprenticeships in order to rebuild a manufacturing base here, then we would be heading in the right direction towards rebuilding the basis of a thriving economy: [real] exports, in all senses of the word. The right wing and the gutter press and 'social' media that feed the maw of reactionary politics in this archipelago are thankfully being quietly ignored by a Prime Minister unafraid of risking personal unpopularity, and who is taking not a whit of notice of the 'early election' baiting that has been such a favourite of the opposition commentariat lately.
Why on earth any government with a significant majority, a not unpopular PM, a stable cabinet and an actual plan would ever risk that position with an early election in such a time of global turbulence is completely beyond rational thought. It just goes to show the shallowness of thought within the opposition, who not only swallowed the wrong pill and bought into the snake-oil of neo-liberalism wholesale decades ago, but also still believe that the Tories are the natural party of government, despite their having proved themselves wholly unsuitable for government in every parliamentary term they have served in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
The UK has little need of their empty posturing and laissez faire 'governance' in the twenty-first century: their track record over the century's first quarter stands grim testimony to just what a total waste of oxygen and money these people and their empty platitudes truly are. People need jobs, food on the table, education, healthcare and, for fucks sake, happiness. These are not aspirations, they are human rights, and those on the right of politics only care for and about themselves and their kind. Their kind are not our kind. Let's build on this good start in this possibly fleeting window of opportunity and lock their hands-off-the-markets non-governmental modus operandi out of subsequent political debate for good. Like my unhurried curry, hard work and patience will eventually see us through...
