A Belated RIP
Some institutions die in the full glare of the public eye with fanfares and encomia befitting their stature and importance to society and to the history of mankind; their mark ensured for future generations to commemorate and contemplate. The common man's history seldom leaves such particular remembrance beyond their family, very often in spite of their uncommon achievements. Such is generally the fate of we, the hoi polloi. However, 'tis not such a deep thing as this that I seek to offer in the following regretful, rather rueful, remembrance. I only heard today - entirely peripherally, and God knows how I missed the news in the first place [April of this year] - that Gentlemen's Relish had been discontinued by its current owners. Alas they simply could not see further profit in the product, despite its history. Short-sighted bastards if you ask me.
I first discovered this most pungent of fishy accompaniments in 1980 and was blown away by the airlift that it could give to my breakfast slice of toast, elevating it to a salty sublimity beyond my then experience. I have always had a pot of the stuff in the larder which I occasionally dip into, but I never use much and it is, to be fair, a very occasional pleasure. However, I find that if I now wish to exercise that whim, I will effectively have to deal with an increasingly scarce and dwindling supply chain of the stuff. The small pots of the condiment, which ordinarily and formerly cost between a fiver and eight quid, can now only be found on eBay for upwards of thirty pounds a pop. Out-bloody-rageous, Sirrah! 'Tis not British! Very soon it will out-price cocaine! I mourn the loss, and will endeavour to recreate this unique concoction in my own kitchen. Keep you posted...
